What does the rooster say?? Cockadoodledoo!!! But, did you know that roosters crow differently depending upon the situation? If you listen (and hear enough crowing) you can tell the difference. They different pitches communicate to the hens if there’s danger, food, or if they are fighting each other. We have 3 roosters and if you watch they each have a job and certain hens. When danger approaches the head rooster heads for safety so the hens know where to go while the other two gather the hens and take up defensive positions.
We have two coops for our hens. At night they usually go to the same coop. Only two of the hens consistently go into the coop that has the two younger roosters although on occasion there will be one or two different hens. The majority of the hens bed with the older, in charge rooster. I’m not sure what causes some of the hens to switch coops. Sometimes I will find one of the young roosters hanging out late at night in the big coop, like he’s trying to entice one of the ladies into his abode!!!! They really are interesting creatures and if you have their eggs fresh from the coop they are sooooo much better tasting!
